From a silver medalist to a 'kacang putih' seller [SPECIAL REPORT]

HE was once a celebrated man on the courts.

Today, former para-athlete Thanga Rajoo Arumugam struggles to make ends meet as he sells "kacang putih" in Petaling Jaya.

Thanga Rajoo, 42, made headlines throughout the 90s and 2000 in wheelchair tennis. He won the 1997 British Open wheelchair tennis championship (men's doubles) and was runner-up at the 1998 Catalonia Open wheelchair tennis tournament in Spain.

While partnering Zulkifli Mohd Ali, the Kedahan netted the silver medal in the men’s tennis doubles event at the 2002 Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled held in Busan.

"It was really a sacrifice and I did it for the passion because I love tennis. No one knew we went and no one knew of our achievements. Even though we represented the country, it went unnoticed by the public and media" Thanga Rajoo said.
