Job-hopping among young Malaysians is nothing new.
Some of the factors:
- Better pay and benefits (obvious!)
- To seek better opportunity, in terms of roles and responsibilities
- We can't stand our current boss or colleagues
Just before we get excited about the new company and contract, think about the following questions:
1. Can your current company do anything to make you stay?
So, maybe you're still 50-50 about leaving.
Most often than not, we leave a company because of an internal 'dispute'. This could be with our boss or colleagues. Perhaps, the issue is your job description and you are not happy with your role and responsibilities.
Instead of you leaving the company, can you work things out with your employer?
2. Is the grass REALLY greener on the other side?
We might think the grass will be much greener at the new company... but is it really? Or will you be stuck with the same problems? Things may look good during your job interview but the real experience is when you start your job at the new company.
A friend of mine told me that he thought his current job would be much better than his previous job. He soon realized that things were just the same i.e. the pressure, the office politics. He told me, "If I knew things were like this, I might have just stayed at the old job!"
3. Will the pay increment make you happy?
I remember when I was offered a contract with a pay increase of RM300. I was a magazine writer then and the new job was something different and not related to media and publishing. I decided to stay and politely told the company that I won't be taking their offer (and they were kinda pissed - obviously!)
Passion vs. Money. You decide!
4. Will your new job help you achieve your career objective?
Ultimately, what do you want to achieve from your career and will your new job elevate you to the next level? Will you be learning new things? Are you going to take on a leadership role at the new place?
***
This post is not about asking you to not sign your new contract and hand in your resignation letter at your current job.
At the end of the day, it is YOUR decision and you know what's BEST for YOU! I do hope you're able to reflect and think about the above questions before deciding your next move!
